Bald eagle visits Greenhead Cove

200_0411-3a

Monday, September 1, 2009. An American Bald Eagle visited Greenhead Cove in Stonington late yesterday afternoon. The eagle was seen several days ago in a tree in the area. This afternoon it settled on a nearby ledge to enjoy the late summer sun and view the lobster boats with Isle au Haut in the background.

The eagle appeared to be drying itself after a dip in the water, probably to catch a fish, which brings to mind the following poem:

The Eagle
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
