William and Tracey Weil, founders of popular iPhone app for parents to entertain children: Tales2Go

Couple with local ties produces popular iPhone app

How many times have you wished you had a good response to the age-old family car trip question, “are we there yet?” William and Tracey Weil, the son and daughter-in-law of Stonington summer residents, Denie and Frank Weil, decided to come up with one.

The couple has created an award-winning kids’ audio story service/app for the iPhone, called Tales2Go. The app, seen recently on The TODAY Show and a Parents’ Choice Award winner, gives moms and dads instant, on-demand and on-the-go access to over 1,200 stories from leading publishers and storytellers to play for their kids on their iPhone, iPod Touch and/or iPad. Stories range from fairytales to classics (such as Curious George Rides a Bike) to popular series and characters (such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid).

The Weils came up with the idea in response to the time, money and effort it took them to get story CDs into their car to play for their now 10, 8 and 6 year-olds, on the way to school, soccer practice, or even during quiet time at home. Listening to stories well-told by professional narrators is highly entertaining [for the whole family] and a great alternative to “screen time.” Recent studies have suggested that too much screen time could have a negative impact on students’ grades and behaviors. Fortunately, kids love listening to stories – and listening to stories on a cool mobile device even more so…

While listening to Tales2Go may or may not get your kid into an ivy league college, Albert Einstein is famous for saying, “if you want your kids to be brilliant, tell them a fairy tale; if you want them to be very brilliant, tell them even more fairy tales.” In fact, listening to audio stories has been shown to enhance vocabulary, build listening and comprehension skills and generally foster a love of literature – for both little and big kids.

Tales2Go can be downloaded for free for 30 days from the Apple App Store, and then requires a $24.99 per year subscription thereafter. The app is currently available on iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads, and will be extended to other mobile platforms (e.g., Android) in the future.
